Bearing Capacity

Bearing capacity is the maximum pressure a soil can support, per unit area, without settling excessively or failing in shear. A geotechnical engineer determines allowable bearing capacity from soil borings and lab testing, and footings are sized so the load they transfer to the soil stays safely below that limit.
