A Best Management Practice (BMP) is a construction method, structure, or piece of equipment used to prevent or reduce pollutants from leaving a construction site — most commonly to protect stormwater quality.
Concrete washout pans, sediment basins, silt fence, and inlet protection are all examples of BMPs. Most municipal and state stormwater permits (see SWPPP) require a documented set of BMPs specific to each project's risks.
Why it matters for washout: A washout pan is one of the most commonly cited BMPs on a SWPPP checklist, precisely because uncontrolled washout water is highly alkaline and easy for an inspector to spot if it isn't contained.
