Cut and Fill

Cut and fill describes the earthwork process of removing soil from areas above the design grade (cut) and depositing it in areas below grade (fill), ideally balancing the two to minimize soil hauled on or off site. Fill areas need particular attention to compaction, since disturbed and re-placed soil is more prone to settlement than undisturbed native ground.
