Deflection

Deflection is the degree to which a beam, slab, or other structural member bends or displaces under load. Excessive deflection — even within a safe strength margin — can crack finishes, cause doors and windows to bind, or simply feel unacceptably bouncy, which is why building codes set deflection limits separate from strength requirements.
