Freeze-Thaw Cycling

Freeze-thaw cycling is the repeated freezing and thawing of water within saturated concrete or soil. In concrete, expanding ice crystals create internal pressure that, over many cycles, causes surface scaling and cracking unless the mix is properly air-entrained; in soil, repeated cycling contributes to frost heave.
