Laitance

Laitance is a weak, brittle surface layer made up of fine cement and aggregate particles, often formed when concrete is overworked or finished too early while bleed water is still present. Because it lacks the strength and durability of the concrete beneath it, laitance is typically removed by scarifying or shot-blasting before applying an overlay, coating, or bonded topping.
