Liquefaction

Liquefaction occurs when loose, saturated, granular soil temporarily loses its strength and stiffness — behaving more like a liquid than a solid — usually triggered by the shaking of an earthquake. Liquefaction can cause significant settlement or tilting of structures built on affected soil and is a key consideration in seismic zones.
