Concrete Glossary

Permeability

Permeability describes how easily water or other fluids pass through a material. In concrete, lower permeability (achieved with a lower water-cement ratio and good consolidation) improves durability by slowing the ingress of water, chlorides, and carbon dioxide that can corrode rebar. In soil, permeability determines how quickly a site drains and how stormwater BMPs should be designed.
