Prestressed Concrete

Prestressed concrete has internal compressive stress deliberately built into it, using tensioned steel tendons (either pre-tensioned before casting or post-tensioned after), so that tensile stresses the member experiences in service are offset by that built-in compression. It's what allows precast beams and post-tensioned slabs to span farther with less material.
