Riparian Zone

A riparian zone is the vegetated land bordering a stream, river, wetland, or other water body. Riparian vegetation filters runoff, stabilizes banks, and provides habitat, which is why many jurisdictions require a protected setback or buffer around riparian zones that limits grading, clearing, or construction activity nearby.
