Set Time (Initial and Final Set)

Set time describes the transition of fresh concrete from a plastic, workable state to a rigid one. Initial set marks the point finishing work should begin, while final set marks the point concrete has enough rigidity that finishing operations should stop. Both are measured in a lab using a penetration-resistance test (ASTM C403).
