Consolidation (Soil Consolidation)

Consolidation is the slow compression of a saturated, fine-grained soil (like clay) over time as sustained load squeezes water out of the pore spaces between soil particles. Unlike immediate elastic settlement, consolidation settlement can continue for months or years after a structure is built, which is why it's a key consideration in foundation design on clay-heavy sites.
