Split Tensile Strength

Split tensile strength is measured by loading a concrete cylinder on its side (rather than on its end, as in a compression test) until it splits along a vertical plane. It's an indirect way to estimate tensile strength, which is otherwise difficult to test directly, and is used in pavement and some structural design where tensile behavior matters.
