Subgrade

The subgrade is the natural or engineered soil surface, graded and compacted, that ultimately supports a slab, pavement section, or foundation. Subgrade preparation — moisture conditioning and compaction, often verified with a Proctor test — is one of the most important and most commonly shortcut steps in flatwork construction.
