Sulfate Attack

Sulfate attack is a chemical deterioration process where sulfate ions — from soil, groundwater, or occasionally deicing salts — react with compounds in hardened cement paste, forming expansive products that crack and weaken the concrete over time. Sites with known sulfate-rich soils typically call for sulfate-resistant cement types.
