Tensile Strength

Tensile strength is a material's resistance to being pulled apart, as opposed to compressive strength, which resists crushing. Plain concrete's tensile strength is only about 8–12% of its compressive strength, which is why elements subject to bending or pulling forces need reinforcing steel (rebar) to carry the tension load.
