Underpinning

Underpinning strengthens or extends an existing foundation — commonly by installing new footings, piers, or piles beneath it — to support additional load (such as an added story) or to arrest and correct settlement in an existing structure. It's typically done in stages to avoid destabilizing the structure during the work.
