Void Ratio

Void ratio is the ratio of void (empty, air- or water-filled) space to solid particle volume within a soil or aggregate sample. It's a fundamental geotechnical property that relates directly to compaction, permeability, and settlement behavior — a lower void ratio generally means denser, stronger, less compressible soil.
